KEYWORDS | sub-sale mid century modern natural light airy
A double-volume ceiling is usually found in Semi-Ds or Bungalows, and is rarely seen in a typical terraced house. It was also one of the key transformations in Mayang Haus.
We removed the walls of the original ground-floor bedroom and completely reconfigured the layout, swapping the positions of the kitchen and bedroom. At the same time, we opened up the Dry Kitchen with a double-volume ceiling, complemented by a warm golden plywood ceiling and an abundance of natural light.Upstairs, we removed one of the walls of an originally enclosed room and replaced it with sliding doors and a balustrade. By connecting it to the study area, spaces that were once separated began to interact with one another. This single double-volume void visually linked the dining area, kitchen, upstairs room, and study area, creating a much stronger sense of openness throughout the home. What’s interesting is that the house itself did not become larger—in fact, the usable floor area was slightly reduced. Yet when the light, proportions, and spatial relationships were transformed, the entire experience of the home changed as well.More often than not, a sense of spaciousness does not come from having a bigger house, but from having a better-designed one.

-- June 2026
