Adaptive DomesticityWe are drawn to old houses not out of nostalgia, but because they reveal how people once imagined living.AK Haus is a renovation of an existing terrace house, where the intention was not to erase its original character and start again, but to carefully adapt it to a different way of living. Rather than making the house feel larger through addition, we worked with light, proportion, material and openness to make the existing spaces feel more generous, connected and alive.Natural light became one of the key tools in reshaping the house. A skylight was introduced above the staircase, bringing daylight into the centre of the home and allowing it to travel into the spaces around it. The staircase, usually treated simply as a circulation space, becomes a light well — quietly changing the atmosphere of the house throughout the day.In the master bedroom, an open bathtub sits directly within the bedroom rather than being enclosed in a conventional bathroom. The arrangement is less about making a statement and more about questioning the usual separation between private functions. Bathing, dressing, resting and sleeping become parts of one continuous domestic space, with privacy created through distance, proportion and spatial arrangement rather than walls alone.The kitchen follows the same approach. Instead of relying on layers of decorative finishes, the cabinetry uses natural plywood doors, allowing the warmth and grain of the material to remain visible. It brings a softer, more tactile quality to a space that is otherwise practical and heavily used. Like the rest of the house, it is intended to age with the people living in it rather than remain perfectly pristine.Ventilation blocks are introduced as another layer between inside and outside. Their patterned openings allow air and filtered light to pass through while maintaining a degree of separation and privacy. They are familiar elements in the language of older Malaysian houses, but here they are used in a contemporary way — not as decoration, but as a simple response to the tropical climate.Throughout AK Haus, the design works with these small shifts rather than dramatic gestures: opening where it makes sense, allowing light to enter from above, letting air move through, exposing natural materials, and reconsidering boundaries between spaces.The result is not a house that tries to look new.It is an old house that has been allowed to become something else.--  Aug  2026
